What to see in Belfast
Belfast (from the Irish Béal Feirste which means the sandy ford at the mouth of the river) is the largest capital and city in Northern Ireland and the second of the entire island of Ireland, after Dublin. In the 2001 census the population within the boundaries of the city (the urban area of Belfast) was 276 459 inhabitants, while 579 554 people resided in the wide metropolitan area of Belfast. This made it the fifteenth largest city in the United Kingdom, and the eleventh major conurbation of that country.
Belfast is located on the east coast of Northern Ireland. The city is flanked northwest by a series of hills, including Cavehill's hill, which is believed to inspire Jonathan Swift's novel, Gulliver's trips. He imagined that he had the shape of a sleeping giant protecting the city. Belfast is also located west of the Belfast Lough (Lake Belfast/Ría de Belfast) and in the mouth of Río Lagan which makes it an ideal location for the naval construction industry that once made it so famous. When Titanic was built in Belfast in 1912, Harland and Wolff had the world's largest shipyard. Originally being a town in Antrim's county, the municipality of Belfast was created when Belfast reached city status thanks to Queen Victoria in 1888.
Belfast suffered the worst of the northern Ireland conflict. However, since the Good Friday Agreement in 1998, there has been greater modernization in the city. There are two airports in the city: George Best airport in the city of Belfast, adjacent to Belfast Lough and Belfast International Airport that is near Lake Neagh. Queen's University is the most important in the city. The University of the Uster also has a campus in the city, where the studies of the Fine Arts and Design are concentrated.
